We've already kinda got a thing like this in googledocs, but maybe it would be more popular in a forum setting. I mean, maybe people will be more likely to contribute if they see a thread with a high postcount, instead of a slowly growing google doc.

Here's the brainstorming around the central idea "[DKO] Late-Nite." Which sort of expands upon or at least follows the same thematic idea as nick's "Late-Night" comic things. Read at your own will.
QUOTE
Hm.  We've never done a comic with all of our DKO characters, though I can't really think of a setting where they'd all exist anyway.  If we could pull it off it'd be cool.

Also, I kinda like the atmosphere you've got in that "Late Night" series you did.  Maybe we could go halvsies between that last idea and this; do a Slice 'o' Life comic of pretty much what we do; but more dramatic!  Put DKO personae in instead of us, have us climbing in through people's windows to wake each other up and get the crew together, tromping around in the night, playing videogames and going for high-speed Mt. Dew runs.  Takes place over the course of a series of weekends/ summer nights or something like that.  Could put us all in the same neighborhood for ease.

fireworks down a long foresty road works. Carnival. That'll remind me and nobi... --Nick

[^^This is a good kinda idea. depending on who works on it, could make like different short stories (going for food, playing games, being up late, etc. (getting everyone is an awesome intro to people tho)) and then each is broken up into like segments, and then each person take a segment. I guess we'd still have to write the whole thing at once, but then with the arting split up it would be made faster. besides, the "one person sketch, one inks, etc." hasn't worked for us before...ask tim. --Nick]

Also, they should go to that power-line clearing we went to.  It's a very nice setting, maybe a good place for them to go contemplating if something really shitty happens to them.

Or...

The Motley Crew Theme always seems to work pretty well.  Cowboy Bebop, Firefly/Serenity, Outlaw Star, Black Lagoon, etc, etc.  Sure there've been some failures (Tripping the Rift? Shitsux, trust me.) but overall the idea seems to be win wherever it's too be found.  Maybe we could go for something like that.  DKO, just us, original characters, whatevah'.  I've also entertained running a Shadowrun campaign with the same idea, so worst comes to worst we can just "replay" the sessions (with some embellishment, for arts sake) in comic form.

-Nobi

Nobi again: Started writing, but erased it.  Will write later, I'm too tired. But it says I wrote something, so I might as well explain why it says so.

So, today (July 18) I (nobi) got tim and paul together, and we tried to do some work for the comic.  You know, coming up with visual style, references, and embarassing "early concept art" that will only be released years later.

On the team so far, Paul and Tim are on the concept art team, with myself directing their work.  I'm thinking duties will shift to Tim and Nick when the actual comic-drawing takes place -not to discriminate against paul's ability but they've got the virtue of working faster.  Story and general writefaggotry has fallen to myself, though Paul has expressed interest in joining my ranks in that endeavor.  However [Does paul read these things? ...No, okay.  Well then:], I'd rather that not happen.  If those of greater constitution and less penchant for erotic dojinshi wish to lend a hand in writing any -and every-thing that needs to get written I'll welcome them, so long as we don't end up with too many cooks in the kitchen, so-to-speak. [not saying I have ability, but I'm more then willing to help with writing. --Nick]

Acquiring webhosting and implementation of site designs would invariably fall to Nick, unless we'd rather someone cut their teeth on this.  Meh.

The premise of the comic is that it's part slice-of-life, part high-school drama, but certain parts will play out more like an adventure.  Taking a page from Genshiken and Mac-Hall, but silliness aside I've always had a thing for story-driven comics.  PLOT - FUCK YEAH!  So I'd like to keep it moving.

Set in what's basically warwick, but more heavily developed.  Sort of a small city instead of a town now.  But certain key places that our characters visit (tetanustopia, The Powerlines Place, the Basement we hang out in) are still all relatively close.  Not sure if it's set while the characters are still in school or not, but from some of the concept drawings they look kind of young (maybe just stylistic touches, but still) so maybe they are.  I wouldn't mind it.  High school dramas, lawl.

Anyway, we came up with a tentative list of characters, we figure that unless we come across some golden rule of character design/interaction that suggests we do otherwise, we'll just create characters for each of us (loosely) and just merge/cut out some characters if there get to be too many.  We may have to invent some girl characters, because well, we know a lot more guys than chicks, and some of them may not be happy with getting characters based on them written into a story that they have no say or interest in.  Hey, it's happened to better established artists in the past. (Ref: Altermeta)

The list we've got so far?  Nobi, K.G (paul), and Tim.  Cos we were the ones there.  Slated for drawing next are airpi and nick.  There's still a ton of fleshing out to do, and we'll probably wait until the whole group's together to do that.  We'll need names, too, because "Nobi" "LCom" and "TiME" don't work to well for the mostly-grounded-in-reality setting we're working on.  We're thinking of throwing in a character based on Jill with her consent, and then various other eye-candy, love interests, and matbe even female characters without those ulterior motives!

We've started logowork/splash screens, although all we've got by way of a working title is [DKO] Late-Night ("Nite" in some cases.)  By way of iconic things/symbols we don't have much, though a few of the screens involve cars, presumably indicative of Nick's Geo.  You know, cars being representative of freedom and newfound teenage independance and all.  As well as being an important plot point just for plain being the characters' main mode of transportation. (figuring, if the comic is set in high school, we wouldn't all have our own cars.)  We could just use a geo metro as one of our emblems, but if nick (I'm putting it to him, but anyone else is welcome) would like to design a car specifically for the comic, it'd be welcome.

Please don't be intimidated by that. Post whatever ideas you feel like. They don't need anything to do with the above, it's just what I've got so far. You never know what might catch.

July 18? Damn we're slow. Well, there is all this college getting in the way, to be fair...

Anywho, I'm making up a scene based on this to use as an animatic project for my graphic storytelling class. I'll show people when I'm done (which'll be in less than two weeks). If you want to write me a scene of like :30 - 1:30 then that would be awesome, otherwise I'm gonna write it myself. I'm thinking I'll do one of the "hey, wake up. now we're driving somewhere" scenes.

I wouldn't mind writing something. :30 - 1:30? That's not very long, but would work perfectly for an "intro" scene or some such. Could be pretty cool.

The thing with Paul and TIm never went anywhere after that first meeting, but I can scrounge together their drawings and throw them up here for refs I guess.

Ionno, the way things seemed we were kinda taking this a different direction. I mean, it's the same cast technically, but there were stylistic changes, and what with it being more a "slice of life" thing than a circus of world-shattering badassery, folks wanted to add more nuance and personality and all that other writefag vomit. Just kidding - About the hating character development part, not the 'people wanted character development' part.

At any rate, there weren't any moogles this time around. Nobi was a real person, and I think they all had names other than their tags, though I'll be buggered to remember what they were.

All in all though; it'd probably be better if you drew up character sketches anyway, we'll be better off with more reference material at any rate. My main problem was wanting to give people some say over how their characters looked/acted, and nobody was giving me a hand. They all wanted to see how Tim and I thought they should look/act. So if you draw pictures, and I write bios, and then people bitch and complain at us until we 'fix' them, it'll look like something got done!

Freakin' yay! \._./

that's what I came up with without writing anything. Shows promise? with a script the dubing (and script) would be better.

Also, people are lazy, so they're more likely to try and fix something if we just put up some pisantry. but yeah.

All right, not bad.

Nice job with the voices, though. I wasn't expecting dialogue when I heard "intro-sequence." Is that one of the requirements, or...?

I'll see to working up a script...

I think I just do better when I'm working dialouge. kinda. Besides, I didn't have any ideas otherwise, and I didn't feel like killing my self trying to edit together ONLY ambient noises. At least with voices I brought in lincoln and flo and then had it ready in chunks.
